Mission Statement:
Founded in 1891, West Virginia State University is a public, land-grant, historically black university (HBCU), which has evolved into a fully accessible, racially integrated, and multi-generational institution. The University, “a living laboratory of human relations,” is a community of students, staff, and faculty committed to academic growth, service, and preservation of the racial and cultural diversity of the institution.

Its mission is to meet higher education and economic development needs of the state and region through innovative teaching and applied research.

The undergraduate education at the University offers comprehensive and distinguished baccalaureate programs in business, liberal arts, professional studies, sciences and social sciences. The University provides master’s degrees and other opportunities for graduate education.

West Virginia State University offers flexible course schedules in traditional classrooms, in non-traditional settings, and online. With the goal of improving the quality of our students’ lives, as well as the quality of life for West Virginia’s citizens, the University forges mutually beneficial relationships with other educational institutions, businesses, cultural organizations, governmental agencies, and agricultural and extension partners.

Where is WVSU located?
WVSU is located in Institute, WV,  just eight miles outside of Charleston, the State Capitol, and is easily accessible by Interstate from many major cities.

I am an athlete, can I play sports at WVSU?
Yes. WVSU competes at the NCAA Division II level in five men's sports and six women's sports. Men's sports are baseball, basketball, football, golf, and tennis, while women compete in basketball, cross country, softball, tennis and volleyball, and women's soccer. What is there to do on campus?
Student Life and Engagement offers many things for students to participate in. Whether it is working out in our fitness center, showing your school pride, participating in a forum, or joining one of the more than 50 clubs and leadership organizations; intramural sports, students are encouraged to get involved. There are also experiential learning opportunities, community service, and civic engagement.  Career Services and internships are available. At State, we encourage you to take advantage of the leadership, service, and student engagement opportunities. 
What are the school colors and mascot?
Our colors are old gold and black.Our mascot is the Yellow Jacket-  who is named Stinger.Yellow Jacket Mascot Stinger
