The WVSU Community

Throughout our  history, West Virginia State University has been committed to the success of the greater Kanawha Valley community, and our futures are inextricably linked.

As the University has grown, so has the number of our connections and contributions to the vitality of the region. Every day, the University makes significant economic, educational, social, and cultual contributions to the Kanawha Valley region community and to the state.

The University provides essential benefits to the public through our core mission— to meet higher education and economic development needs of the state and region through innovative teaching and applied research. Fulfilling this mission without both public and private support would be impossible.

We serve this community best by focusing on these mission. As a result, we one of two-land-grant institutions and one of only three public research universities leading higher education and research  in West Virginia. We are active in supporting and creating positive change in our local community.

Beyond the academic classrooms and faculty research laboratories, the West Virgina State campus offers a wide variety of experiential opportunities and activities for both students, faculty, staff and the surrounding community. From speaker series, to arts and culture, student led activities, community service projects, there is always something to see and do on STATE's bustling Institute campus.

If sports is more your interest, WVSU competes at the NCAA Division II level and games are held on campus throughout the year. Whether it be football on Lakin Field in the fall, or basketball in the D. Stephen and Diane H. Walker Convocation Center in the winter, or baseball in the spring, there are numerous chances throughout the year to root on the Yellow Jackets.

We are expanding our role in the surrounding communities by engaging in mutually beneficial relationships that engage our students, faculty and staff in the community to drive community enhancement. We strive to become a leader in serving the needs and aspirations of our communities and region through expanded community relationships, institutional reputation and visibility and engagement.

But don’t just take our word for it. Come see for yourself. Visiting WVSU is the best way to get a feel for our beautiful campus, our close knit community and our student-centered facilities.
