West Virginia State University Department of Biology Named One of the Best in the Nation

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University (WVSU) Department of Biology has been ranked the No. 3 program for a biology degree in the country by Best Value Schools, a national online college rating service.

Best Value Schools recognized the WVSU biology department as No. 3 in the nation in its rankings of the Top 50 Best Small Colleges for a Biology Degree. In their methodology, the online service utilized data from College Navigator such as admittance rates, tuition rates, financial aid and other factors.

“This ranking validates our commitment to creating an excellent learning environment for our students,” said Dr. Naveed Zaman, dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. “Through innovative teaching, applied research, and agricultural extension services, the department of biology plays a critical role in helping WVSU fulfill the University's land-grant mission. I am very proud of our faculty and students whose hard work has resulted in this recognition.”

The online rating service noted that a biology degree is one of the most versatile degrees an undergraduate student can obtain, with graduates having the flexibility to become teachers, researchers, or conservationists, to go to graduate school, or to enter into a number of pre-professional programs, from medicine to pharmacy.

“West Virginia State University provides one of the best educational experiences in the biological sciences of any college or university, regardless of size or price,” said Dr. Sean Collins, chair of the Department of Biology. “We are able to combine top-notch instruction, small class sizes, state-of-the-art equipment, and a diverse array of research opportunities for students that is truly unique.”
