West Virginia State University Students’ Work Featured at Undergraduate Research Day
 
INSTITUTE, W.Va. — Ten West Virginia State University (WVSU) student research projects will be showcased at the State Capitol as part of the 17th Annual Undergraduate Research Day Friday, Feb. 7.

The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. in the State Capitol rotunda, and will feature research posters from students representing 11 colleges and universities throughout the state. This year marks the second time WVSU has served as the lead organizer of the day’s events. 

WVSU student research on display includes the following projects in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science and criminal justice:

Shyann Stewart, “Behavioral Assays of Seven OMRI Approved Insecticides on the Biocontrol Generalist Predator, Chrysoperla rufilabris;”
  • Samantha Belcher, “Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) on Feeding Effects of Nigella sativa on Drosophila melanogaster;”
  • Hannah Hudson, “Additional Species Diversity of the Rhinebothriidean Genus Stillabothrium;”
  • Chinyere Ugwuanyi, “Detecting genes from the nitrogen biogeochemical cycle in Kanawha River sediment;”
  • Samantha White, “The Effect of Habanero on the Body Weight of Drosophila Melonogaster;”
  • Christopher Bias, “Organic Synthesis of Acylated Sucrose for Integrated Pest Management;”
  • Rachel Minney, “Progress Towards Synthesizing an Aluminum Binding Ligand;”
  • Jayden Creasey, “Research on a new generation of neural networks based on Agent Technology;”
  • Grace Martin, “Cycle of Child Abuse;” and
  • Sierra Rabel, “Substance Abuse and its Correlation to Rise in Crime in West Virginia.
