West Virginia State University Establishes Endowed Scholarship for Science Students
INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University (WVSU) Chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the WVSU Foundation today announced the establishment of a new endowed scholarship for students studying science at the University.
The David Scott Thaxton Memorial Scholarship has received gifts of more than $30,000 to endow the scholarship. The first recipients of the new scholarship will be announced in the spring, for the next academic year.
Thaxton, a native of Sissonville, W.Va., graduated from WVSU in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. While a student he was an active member of the WVSU ACS chapter. He was killed in a car accident in October 2017.
“David was a fantastic person, student and friend,” said Dr. Micheal Fultz, chair of the WVSU Chemistry Department and advisor to the WVSU ACS chapter. “He will always be remembered as someone who would support his friends and community, and with this scholarship we hope to carry on his legacy by assisting students as they reach out into the community. He made an impact on the WVSU student community that will not be forgotten.”
Scholarships from the endowed fund will go to full-time WVSU students seeking a degree in one of the sciences that are in good academic standing.
