Artist Reception set for Thursday, Oct. 13, at West Virginia State University

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – A reception with artist Emily Arthur will take place Thursday, Oct. 13, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Della Brown Taylor Hardman Fine Art Gallery at West Virginia State University (WVSU).

Arthur’s exhibit “Indirect Take” will be on display through Nov. 1 in the gallery, which is located in the Davis Fine Arts Building on WVSU’s Institute campus. The reception is free and open to the public. 

“This series of artwork responds to an active controversy between scientists, environmentalists and government policy as the protection of an endemic bird population is threatened,” Arthur said. “’The Indirect Take’ exhibition at the WVSU gallery seeks to change the perspective from subjugation of the land to an understanding of how plant and animal species carry the story of human impact on the environment.”

Arthur is an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Arthur came to UW-Madison after spending 13 years at the University of North Florida, where since 2010 she served as an associate professor with the Department of Art and Design, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking.

Arthur received a master’s of fine arts degree from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and has served as a Fellow at the Barnes Foundation for Advanced Theoretical and Critical Research.

Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art; Crocker Art Museum;  Museum of the American West, Autry Center;  Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Institute of American Indian Arts and the Denver Art Museum of Art.

“Indirect Take” may be viewed from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
