West Virginia State University, FOOTMAD to Present Andean Music Group Nov. 14

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) and the Friends of Old Time Music and Dance (FOOTMAD) will present an appearance by Andes Manta, a group specializing in the music of the Andes Mountains, on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 8 p.m. at the WVSU Capitol Center Theater in downtown Charleston.

General admission tickets are $20 at the door, while tickets for seniors are $15. Tickets are $10 for students. WVSU students and employees will be admitted for free, as will those under 13, and AmeriCorps VISTA workers. Tickets will be sold at the door, starting at 7 p.m.

Playing over 35 traditional instruments, Andes Manta performs the music of the Andean mountains rooted in the cultural heritage of the Incas and their ancestors.

“Our music is the music of the people,” said Wilson Lopez, one of four brothers who comprise the band. “With it we celebrate harvest, carnival, solstice, village life and religion.”

Natives of the Ecuadorian Andes, the brothers learned their traditional folk music as it has been learned for thousands of years – passed down through families from generation to generation. The musicians of Andes Manta believe that through their music they bring an opportunity for cultural understanding between the people of South America and the people of modern North America.

The WVSU Department of Music and FOOTMAD, in cooperation with the WVSU Department of Education and the WVSU Cultural Activities Committee, joined to bring Andes Manta to the area.

On Friday, Nov. 13, Andes Manta will give a special lecture, demonstration performance at 10:30 a.m. in the F. S. Belcher Theater of the Davis Fine Arts Building for students from Mary C. Snow Elementary School, as well as WVSU students.

Then at 1 p.m. on Nov. 13 Andes Manta will give another lecture, demonstration performance for high school students and WVSU students.

The WVSU Capitol Center Theater is located at 123 Summers St. in Charleston.
