West Virginia State University Student Film and Video Festival Set for March 5
INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The third annual West Virginia State University (WVSU) Tower Awards Film Festival will take place Thursday, March 5, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Davis Fine Arts Center Theater on the school’s Institute campus.
The festival will showcase submissions from WVSU students as well as local high school students. The event is free and open to the public.
The festival is designed to give high school and WVSU students the opportunity to have their work in film and video recognized and rewarded within an academic setting. In all, 28 entries were received to be screened during the event.
“It is always exciting to see the young talent growing across our great state,” said WVSU Visiting Instructor and Festival Co-chair Roger Echols.
Students will have the opportunity to take home cash prizes and trophies for their accomplishments and have their work evaluated by the competition judges, some of whom are pioneers of the film business as well as documentary and commercial advertising experts.
“The Tower Awards allow WVSU to acknowledge imagination and innovation and inspire students to reach new creative heights,” said WVSU Communications Department Chair and Festival Co-chair Dr. Ali Ziyati.
Festival categories include narrative or abstract films. In addition, new this year is a Vine contest and a “Film Scramble” called “3-2-1 Action,” where students will be challenged to produce a three minute video using only two props and one storyline. The “Scramble” will be voted on live by the audience in attendance, which will determine the winners.
