West Virginia State Students Honored for Public Relations Work for Local Business

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University’s (WVSU) Charles R. Byrd Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and its student operated public relations firm Tower Communications recently won top honors in the West Virginia Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America statewide Crystal Awards program.

WVSU’s PRSSA group and Tower Communications received the Crystal Award for the Best in Special Events (less than seven days) category for the grand opening of Massage Envy Spa. The PRSSA group and Tower Communications developed the marketing plan for the spa’s grand opening, scheduled the event with a guest speaker and developed strategies to promote the event.

In addition, WVSU’s PRSSA group and Tower Communications received an honorable mention award for a promotional video developed for the Kanawha Kordsmen.  The finished product included interviews, performances and re-enactments in order to make the viewer aware of services available as well as how to become a member of the all men’s chorus.

In addition to the students’ award winning work, WVSU Communications Professor Dr. Tee Ford-Ahmed was honored with the Dr. Hal Shaver, APR Public Relations Educator of the Year Award.

Established as one of the first nationally-affiliated student-operated  public relations firms in 2006, Tower Communications is the public relations firm of the WVSU Charles R. Byrd Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America.

Since its inception the student-run group has serviced contracts totaling over $100,000. All of the work of Tower Communications is developed and implemented by WVSU students. This includes proposal preparation/presentation, implementation and final evaluative reports to clients.
