WVSU EDC Hosts Workshop on Sportscasting in the Digital Age

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Join well-known Kanawha Valley Sports Director Mark Martin for the workshop, “Sportscasting in the Digital Age” at the West Virginia State University (WVSU) Economic Development Center (EDC) Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

With advances in technology and wider use of social media, there are now a wider variety of mediums available to deliver sports content than ever before. Participants in the workshop will learn how to develop and produce sports programming, in addition to receiving information about sportscasting as a career. 

“In the ever-changing world of social media, there are more opportunities than ever before to enjoy the trade. This workshop will teach participants about the many facets of sportscasting, from anchoring to play-by-play to reporting, and also how to demonstrate that knowledge in front of an audience,” Martin said. “This workshop would be great not only for those who are perhaps in college majoring in a form of broadcasting, but for high school students looking to get a jump start on their career.”

This workshop is also ideal is for anyone who has spent time working in another field but would love to try their hand at going to games and bringing the action, news and stories to viewers online, he added.

Martin has been Sports Director at WCHS-TV and WVAH-TV in the Charleston/Huntington market since 2000 and has served as a color commentator and sideline reporter for games airing on ESPN Regional and Fox Sports. He is the recipient of a regional Emmy and The Associated Press Lifetime Achievement Award and has been named West Virginia Sportscaster of the Year twice. Martin has both an extensive radio and writing career. He has authored one book and is currently working on a second.

Attendees will receive a Certificate of Participation that will count as two units toward a Creators Certificate, awarded after the completion of 20 Creators Program workshop units.

Launched last year, the Creators Program is a series of community workshops focused on essential skills and knowledge needed to create for mass media and art. WVSU partners with the Arts Council of Kanawha Valley and the West Virginia Film Office on the series. Workshops are designed for people of all skill levels, including students and others interested in expanding their creative endeavors.
