Women’s Basketball Team Hosts MEC-CIAA Challenge

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University (WVSU) women’s basketball team opens its 2013-14 season Friday by hosting the First Annual MEC-CIAA Challenge at Fleming Hall.

The two-day event pits the Yellow Jackets and the University of Charleston from the new Mountain East Conference against Chowan University and Johnson C. Smith University from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Friday’s action begins with the Yellow Jackets taking the court to play Chowan at 5:30 p.m. with the Golden Eagles and Johnson C. Smith tipping off at 7:30 p.m.

Play continues in Institute Saturday with West Virginia State taking on Johnson C. Smith at 3:30 p.m. followed by Charleston facing Chowan at 5:30 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets return three starters in seniors Asia-Bryanne Greenleaf, Jordan Brock, and India Taste from last season’s squad that won nine of its final 12 games to finish 12-10 in conference play and 13-14 overall.

Greenleaf, a Parkersburg native, was second on the team in scoring averaging 10.5 points a game while Brock, a Winfield product, was third averaging 10.2. Greenleaf led the team in rebounds pulling down 8.5 a game with Taste leading the Yellow Jackets with 3.8 assists per contest.
