Internationally Renowned Dance Troupe Step Afrika! to Perform at WVSU
INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Step Afrika!, an internationally renowned group devoted to the traditional art of stepping, will be performing at West Virginia State University (WVSU) in the P. Ahmed Williams Auditorium of Ferrell Hall on Monday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m.
This event is open to the public and free to all students, staff and faculty with a WVSU ID. Tickets for the general public will be $10 at the door and seating will be first come first serve.
The show will open with brief presentations by Appalachian dancers as well as feature stepping performances from some of WVSU’s very own fraternities. There will be a reception following the conclusion of Step Afrika!’s performance on the first floor of Ferrell Hall.
Step Afrika! was founded in 1994 by Brian Williams, a graduate of Howard University. Williams became familiar with stepping through his lengthy practices with the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity when practicing extensively for homecomings. During travels back and forth to Africa, Williams noticed a strikingly comparable relationship between the dances in Africa and stepping. He then set out to form a group that would connect the two cultures while spreading a positive message about college education and community service through their performances.
