WVSU 4-H holds pumpkin drop for East End youth

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) will host a pumpkin drop with local children Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 3 p.m. at the Roosevelt Neighborhood Center located on Charleston’s East End. Nearly 50 kids from the Roosevelt and Pro-Kids after-school programs will drop pumpkins from the third floor of the building.

“Through this pumpkin drop, kids will utilize the science and math skills they’re learning in the classroom in a fun, hands-on activity,” said Jaime Adkins, STEM education coordinator at WVSU. “They’re learning without even realizing it.”

The activity fosters knowledge and application of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills, as teams attempt to build an apparatus that will bring their pumpkin to the ground unharmed.

In recent weeks, Adkins and staff from WVSU Extension Service’s 4-H program and the WVSU Center for the Advancement of STEM have been teaching the children about the science involved in the drop and have guided the teams in their project designs. Teams of youth in grades 3-5 will take part in the event.

The Roosevelt Neighborhood Center is located at 502 Ruffner Ave. in Charleston.
