West Virginia State University Students Earn National Honor
Named National Broadcasting Society – Alpha Epsilon Rho Chapter of the Year
INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Students at West Virginia State University (WVSU) brought home top honors from the National Broadcasting Society – Alpha Epsilon Rho when they received the National Chapter of the Year award at the society’s annual meeting on Saturday, March 23, in Washington, D.C.
The award is the highest honor given by the National Broadcasting Society – Alpha Epsilon Rho.
“We are so proud of our students for their accomplishments recognized at this year's national convention,” said Assistant Professor Sherri Shafer, who along with Kim Cobb serves as co-advisor to the campus chapter. “It shows the hard working attitude of our students, their creativity and dedication to their craft.”
In addition to being named National Chapter of the Year, the WVSU students also received the Motivated Chapter award for community service, membership growth, scholarship fundraising and on and off campus activities.
WVSU student Scotty White was also recognized with the grand prize in the Audio Feature category.
“It is a great honor to be recognized on a national level,” White said. “It is just more proof of the level of training and professional resources we have here at WVSU.”
In addition, White was also elected to serve as the student representative on the Board of Governors of the National Broadcasting Society – Alpha Epsilon Rho. The WVSU chapter was founded only five years ago and currently has 22 members, comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students interested in media and communications.
Previously, WVSU has been recognized as the Rookie Chapter of the Year during its first year, and in 2010-2011 the chapter received the Advisor of the Year award.
The National Broadcasting Society - Alpha Epsilon Rho, is a student and professional society with more than 85 chapters on college, university, community college and high school campuses. The Society had its beginning in the early 1940's on the campus of Stephens College in Columbia, Miss. Over 30,000 individuals have been initiated into the society since its founding.
West Virginia State University is a public, land grant, historically black university, which has evolved into a fully accessible, racially integrated, and multi-generational institution, located in Institute, W.Va.
