WVSU to host open house for area high school seniors

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University is hosting an open house for all area high school seniors beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, on the school’s campus at Institute.

The day-long program is designed for prospective WVSU students, and their parents, and will feature presentations on financial aid, choosing a major and will also feature a tour of the campus.

“This open house program is a great way for visitors to get a sense of the quality academic and student life programs WVSU offers,” said Katherine McCarthy, vice president for Enrollment and Student Affairs. “By talking with University representatives, including our students, prospective students can learn all about the State experience. Future Yellow Jackets who apply for admission during their visit on Nov. 12 will have their application fee waived.”

The open house is taking place on Veterans Day, as most high school students are out of school, and many of their parents are also off work. Event check-in is at 9 a.m. at the Wilson University Union, with a 9:30 a.m. welcome and overview of WVSU.

At 10 a.m. students and parents will learn the basics of navigating student financial assistance, and at 10:30 a.m. move on to a workshop on choosing a major.

Running concurrently with the programs, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., will be an academic and student life fair, featuring student activities and student organizations from around WVSU’s campus.

From 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. students will get to spend time with the academic college of their choice and hear from both faculty members and current WVSU students about life on campus.

“We’re especially excited about this customized academic portion because students will get time to meet with the faculty and staff of the college they are interested in and ask questions of current students,” McCarthy said.

Participants will enjoy lunch in the Student Union from 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m., followed by a tour of the WVSU campus, which will conclude by 2:15 p.m.

Pre-registration for the open house is encouraged, but not required. Parents and students may register online at www.wvstateu.edu/visit.

For more information about the open house, contact the WVSU Office of Admissions at (304) 204-4345 or 1-800-987-2112.
