Green Chemistry
Topic of WVSU Convocation

The WVSU College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics will hold its fall convocation on Tuesday, October 18 in 122 Wallace Hall. Featured speaker will be Dr. John C. Warner, Chief Technology Officer for the Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry. His remarks " Green Chemistry: New Eyes and New Ideas in Science" will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Dr. Warner will address the reality that the next generation of students in chemistry will be living and working in a very different world that the previous generation. The next generation should be optimistic about the promise of green chemistry. His discussion will explain why all students need to know that they are essential to achieving a sustainable future.

As a member of the leadership team of the Warner Babcock Institute, Dr. Warner's focus is on green chemistry, an approach to the way products are made. It is a science that aims to reduce or eliminate the use and/or generation of hazardous substances in the design phase of materials development rather than dispose or treat waste once a process or material has been developed. Dr. Warner has published more than 200 patents, papers and books. He received the 2004 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Mentoring.
