WVSU Celebrates Arbor Day April 9

4/6/2010

“April is Arbor Month in West Virginia, so we want to do something to honor arboriculture in our state while tying the festivities to our youth literacy initiatives,” says Jessica Russo, Program Assistant, Agriculture & Natural Resources.

Young people from the Partnership of African American Churches afterschool program will be onsite to participate in hands-on activities relating to Arbor Day and literacy.  Extension staff members will share with the youth books relating to trees and tree care, then guide them through interactive activities that bridge the message of the books with fun and educational art projects.

Also during the festivities, representatives from the West Virginia Division of Forestry will announce the winner of their Children’s Arbor Day Poster Contest and present WVSU Extension Service with an award for the agency’s continued support of urban forestry related initiatives throughout West Virginia.
