Our Foundation & Legacy
Since 1902, 4-H has been devoted to “making the best better” through the educational process of learning by doing. Our core mission is to help young people develop the essential life skills needed to become productive, active and compassionate members of society. WVSU 4-H proudly carries this rich legacy forward by nurturing leadership, community participation and individual growth. We bring positive youth development to life with modern approaches that ignite curiosity and spark enthusiasm.
Who We Are
WVSU Extension Service’s 4-H Youth Development program area—part of a network of more than 100 Land-grant Universities nationwide—empowers young people through hands-on, experiential learning. WVSU 4-H is dedicated to providing free, high-quality and innovative educational opportunities across southern West Virginia.
4-H Core Pillars
We build confidence and 21st century skills by focusing on four primary areas:
- STEM: Engaging young people with cutting-edge technology and scientific inquiry.
- Agriculture: Connecting young minds to food systems, sustainability and environmental stewardship.
- Healthy Living: Encouraging physical, social and emotional well-being.
- Civic Engagement: Preparing young people to be active, informed and compassionate leaders in their local communities.
Who We Serve
- Youth: We promote exciting, non-traditional 4-H programs, special interest events and unique community activities to build essential 21st century life skills for young people ages 5 through 18.
- Non-Formal and Formal Educators: We deeply value and support teachers, coaches, club leaders and volunteers working in schools, libraries, faith-based groups and community organizations. WVSU 4-H delivers high-quality programming, services, curriculum-enrichment tools and professional development opportunities that empower educators with the knowledge and confidence to lead effectively.
- Families: We partner with parents and caregivers to support their efforts in raising happy, healthy and successful children. By providing free at-home educational activities and engaging community events, we make positive youth development a shared, rewarding journey for the whole family.
What Makes WVSU 4-H Unique?
Our programs extend far beyond the boundaries of traditional 4-H clubs. We meet young people directly where they are by bringing exciting, hands-on learning opportunities straight to schools, public libraries and community organizations. Through our Curricular Enhancement Activities (CEAs), we provide safe, supportive spaces that build youth self-esteem while equipping facilitators with top-tier training. Whether in a classroom, outdoors or at home, we offer versatile pathways for young people to grow their teamwork, problem-solving and leadership skills.
