WVSU-IBM Partnership
WVSU has partnered with IBM to provide training in current key technology areas for its students. Through this partnership training will be provided in critical areas of technology such as cyber security, data science, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, internet of things, blockchain, quantum computing, etc., using IBM’s Computing and training resources.
WVSU students earn digital badges at the completion of the courses. IBM digital badges demonstrate a level of proficiency, and can be displayed on social media (including LinkedIn), and are beneficial in securing employment.
See the below for information on how to create an IBM account, the various IBM training opportunities and how to register for them.
IBM Account
An IBM account is needed in order to access IBM Learning resources. Using your wvsu email-id you can create an account following the steps below.
1. Visit https://sb-auth.skillsbuild.org/signup or the QR code below, and click “Create an IBMid”.
2. In the next screen, enter your wvsu email address, first and last name and a password as per requirements. Click Next.
3. Verify using the email you received and finish creating account after entering the information asked.
Foundational IBM Courses for Freshmen
The following basic/foundational courses are currently offered by IBM and are suitable for freshmen and high-school students.
Freshmen are recommended to take atleast one of the following self-paced foundational level courses.
Getting Started with Artificial Intelligence
Does artificial intelligence spark your interest? Embark on a journey into the world of artificial intelligence with this course designed for beginners. Gain foundational knowledge in artificial intelligence systems, common industry applications, and a look into the innovative realm of generative AI. This course offers the perfect starting point for anyone who wants to understand and use the transformative power of AI technology.
Pre-requisites: Basic IT Literacy.
Duration: 3 hours
Recognition: Upon successful completion, student will earn badge through Credly.
Getting Started with Data
Are you curious to discover the type of insights we can extract from data? Organizations use data to understand trends and predict outcome. Data scientists leverage powerful tools, languages, and libraries to solve complex business challenges. Learn the fundamentals of data concepts, such as types of data, big data, the typical steps in the data analytics process, and data visualization. You will explore tools and methodologies to extract, clean, analyze, and visualize data.
Pre-requisites: Basic IT Literacy.
Duration: 3 hours
Recognition: Upon successful completion, student will earn badge through Credly.
Getting Started with Cybersecurity
Are you interested in learning how organizations safeguard digital systems and data from cyber threats? Cybersecurity is a rapidly evolving and essential field that revolves around protecting information systems from unauthorized access, cyberattacks, and data breaches. Dive into foundational cybersecurity concepts and practices, including data privacy, threats, and key elements of cybersecurity. Explore the CIA triad model to evaluate security posture and learn more about cybersecurity careers that may be suitable for you! Become familiar with the tools cybersecurity experts use to prevent breaches and threats.
Pre-requisites: Basic IT Literacy.
Duration: 3 hours
Recognition: Upon successful completion, student will earn badge through Credly.
IBM’s Security Learning Academy
IBM’s Security Learning Academy provides cybersecurity curricula, with cloud access and hands-on learning experience to expand and develop skills in cybersecurity sector. The courses are grouped into various Roadmaps, targetted towards developing skill-sets required for various areas of Cybersecurity. These are self-paced courses and the student will earn badges upon completion.

Cost of Training
All IBM training is free for all courses that are offered as “for-credit” courses under any under-graduate or graduate course offerings, including all self-paced and instructor-led courses.
There may be an associated fee for non-credit courses such as workshops or bootcamps, using the IBM Skills Academy material. Look at specific announcements in this category for fee details.
Benefits of Training
Students will receive quality training using IBM’s learning resources and computational infrastructure.
• Upon completion of training, they will receive IBM badges, verified and issued by Credly.
• The badges are a testimony of skills gained and the skill sets will add weightage in resume and in any applications for jobs or higher education.
IBM HBCU Security Expert Lecture Series
This live presentation will provide a better understanding of how a Security Operations Team works to provide consistent oversight of customers within a suite of security products.

IBM Speed Mentoring for HBCU’s
The Speed Mentoring Program facilitates one-to-one mentoring relationships that connect students with leaders in IBM to learn and develop, and help expand networks, gain new knowledge and insights, and build new skills. Visit: https://skillsbuild.chronus.com/p/p6
IBM Parker Dewey Paid Micro-internships
Schools who are formally a part of the IBM Freshman Initiative have the opportunity for their freshmen and all other students to earn one of the badges and then are able to compete for a paid micro-internship. These micro-internships have been curated based on the skill level achieved by taking the “Getting Started” courses, take10 hours to complete. Students are paid $250.00 once the projects are completed.
Students get to work remotely on interesting projects with businesses across the US, while building their resume with real world experience and getting paid.
