Annual Writing Contests

Each spring, the English Department is happy to sponsor writing contests.  Winners receive monetary prizes and are invited to read their work at the English Department Luncheon in April. The writing contests include the following categories:

  • Marshburn Poetry Prize: Named in honor of Professor Sandy Marshburn, who taught creative writing at WVSU for 30 years. The contest is open to students currently enrolled at WVSU. Please send 1-3 poems in any style.
  • Giardina Fiction Prize: Named in honor of our recent writer-in-residence Denise Giardina. The contest is open to students currently enrolled at WVSU. Please send 1-2 stories. Entries should not be over 15 pages in length.
  • The Non-Fiction Writing Prize:  The contest is open to students currently enrolled at WVSU.  All types of non-fiction writing will be considered, including personal narrative, literary analysis, travel writing, and expository writing.

Deadline for all writing contests is Friday April 10th at 4:00 pm. Please bring your submission to the English Department Office at Hill Hall 226, or e-mail it to amcconnell@wvstateu.edu.  Be sure to include the entry form found below, so that we have your name, address, phone number, and email address in addition to which category you are submitting for.
