LEC Employment Opportunities
The Learning Enrichment center hires student workers throughout the year. West Virginia State University students can work as tutors or Supplemental Instruction leaders. Our student workers are responsible in both their work and academic endeavors. Positions and job descriptions are provided below.
Peer Tutor
All tutors must have at least a 3.0 GPA and sophomore status or higher. Tutors provide individual assistance in one or more designated disciplines. They work in the LEC during specified hours on the weekly schedule and tutor students who drop in during those hours. Other responsibilities include helping out with answering the telephone and general office duties. It is the primary responsibility of tutors to provide academic guidance and modeling for students who come for tutoring sessions; they do not complete homework assignments or take-home exams.
Supplemental Instruction Leaders
All Supplemental Instruction (SI) leaders must have at least a 3.0 GPA and sophomore status or higher. SI leaders are highly qualified tutors who receive additional intensive training for working specifically with high-risk classes for which Supplemental Instruction is scheduled. (For details about the SI program and the high-risk classes, click here.) SI leaders must attend all class meetings with the regular enrollees, serving as model students in class. In addition, the SI leaders conduct two to three supplemental study sessions (outside regular class meetings) totaling 3 1/2 hours weekly. SI leaders are also responsible for planning the content of their supplemental sessions, preparing study aids and handouts for SI, and completing required paperwork. Emphasis for SI leaders is on reinforcing the professor’s lessons, clarifying points of confusion, and providing organizational models the students can emulate in their own individual studying.
