What is Handshake?
Handshake is a career platform designed mainly for college students and recent graduates seeking job and internship opportunities. Additionally, it acts as a valuable resource for employers, career centers, and various organizations to connect with and recruit talent. Handshake’s mission is to democratize access to career opportunities by linking students with a diverse array of employers, regardless of their backgrounds or existing connections. All career fairs organized by WVSU will utilize Handshake for their operations, which encompasses both employer registration and associated fees.
With Handshake, you can:
- Post job and internship opportunities
- Host virtual or in-person recruiting events
- Register for WVSU career fairs
- Build brand visibility on campus
Creating your Employer Handshake Account
- Create an employer account for yourself
- Connect with (or create) your company’s profile
- Connect with schools (you will receive a notification once approved)
Common Handshake Tasks
Employer Guidelines
- Employers must align with WVSU’s values and adhere to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Principles for Ethical Professional Practice.
- Must be a legitimate organization with verifiable business details, including name, physical and web addresses, phone number, and a reachable contact person.
- Foreign-based businesses may be verified by the U.S. Department of State.
- Must comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws, including equal employment opportunity regulations, WVSU’s non-discrimination policies, immigration, and affirmative action laws.​
Recruitment Conduct:
- All recruitment activities should be coordinated through the Office of Career Services or appropriate academic departments.
- Unannounced classroom visits and unsolicited communications with faculty or staff are prohibited.
- All marketing efforts on campus must receive prior approval from Career Services or the specific WVSU College, or Department you are targeting. Avoid aggressive tactics; unsolicited or excessive communications to students are discouraged
Recruitment Opportunities
- Career Fairs-Attend one of our industry focused career fair or our annual internship fair or career and employment expo.
- Classroom Visits -Speak directly to students in academic settings about your company’s opportunities and research.
- Faculty Interaction-Connect with faculty and tour labs or spaces to build academic partnerships and talent pipelines.
- Information Sessions-Highlight career opportunities and network with targeted audiences through on-campus or virtual info sessions.
- Interview and Resume Workshops-Co-lead sessions that prep students for applying and interviewing at your organization
- On-Campus Interviews-Host interviews on campus to meet with qualified students. These can be pre-scheduled or set up as open interviews.
- On-Campus Tabling-Set up in high-traffic areas for informal chats with students. Ideal for brand visibility and casual engagement.
- Professional Panels-Join other industry leaders for student Q&A sessions highlighting career pathways in your field.
- Resume Reviews-Join our Career Services staff during open resume review sessions to assist students in developing strong application materials.
