Meet Kelsey Snyder, a senior Social Work major from Nitro, West Virginia. She is president of the WVSU chapter of Phi Alpha Honor Society. She is also currently an intern at The Service Station in Poca where she works with individuals with intellectual disabilities and tries to empower them to live as independently as possible with lifestyle skills and job skills. Kelsey hopes to continue working with the disabled community after she graduates next May.
Here’s a little bit more about her:
Why did you choose Social Work as your major? “I just wanted to help more people in the disabled community. A lot of people in the disabled community are not represented or they need help and they can’t get it, and I want to make sure they can live their life as independently as possible.”
Why did you choose WVSU? “I chose State because it’s close to home and there’s not a lot of people and it’s generally accessible, more than most places.”
What is the best part of WVSU, in your opinion? “Just the people. They are so kind.”
What do you like to do in your free time? “I like to go outside for walks and I like to read books and listen to music.”
Favorite class you have taken at State? “Social Work Practice II”
What kind of music do you enjoy listening to? “My favorite’s Adele.”
What would you tell a friend about the Social Work program at WVSU? “It’s awesome. The professors are so sweet. There’s only three, but they work really hard to make sure you are prepared for the workforce once you’ve graduated.”
What’s your favorite spot on campus? “The library”
Do you have any advice for others who may be interested in Social Work? “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t be afraid to go to office hours.”
Any words of encouragement to the disabled community you are so passionate about? “Don’t let your disabilities or differences stop you from chasing your dreams.”
