Sowing Young Sprouts brings together inquiry-based science, real-world technology, and outdoor education at the elementary level to prepare children to become problem-solvers, entrepreneurs and live a sustainable lifestyle. Curriculum activities build toward the goal of instilling a sustainability mindset in students by combining natural sciences and entrepreneurship.
Part of that curriculum comes from the Junior Master Gardener Program; SCRATCH participants receive JMG Certification while working in school gardens or greenhouses and while growing through hydroponics or aeroponics. SCRATCH youth then learn about business and entrepreneurship by selling their products at local markets.
Currently, SCRATCH Raleigh partners provide programming at Crescent Elementary, Cranberry-Prosperity Elementary, Shady Spring Branch Library and the Community Transformation Center in Raleigh County. There are raised beds and container gardening sites at Cranberry-Prosperity Elementary (pictured above) and Shady Spring Branch Library. The program actively reaches 50 participants.Â
We are looking to expand our programming into additional schools, libraries and community centers throughout Raleigh County. Â
