On October 23-24, nine dedicated West Virginia State University (WVSU) research students attended the annual Career Development Conference hosted by the 1890 Universities Foundation at The Whitley Atlanta Buckhead in Atlanta, GA. Led by WVSU Researcher Dr. Barbara Liedl, this diverse group included two biology majors in plant and soil science, one agricultural economics major and six agribusiness majors, all eager to explore career opportunities within the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
The conference started with engaging workshops designed to prepare students for careers in federal service. Participants gained insights into the job application process, resume preparation and essential interviewing skills from experienced professionals, including keynote speaker Dr. Terry Cosby, chief of the NRCS. On the second day, they featured an on-site job fair, presenting students with valuable networking opportunities and the chance to meet face-to-face with state conservationists and hiring managers.
This initiative emphasizes the 1890 Universities Foundation’s commitment to student career development. It offers resources to help young professionals navigate the path to successful careers in agriculture, biology and related fields. WVSU students left the conference equipped with knowledge, skills and connections to advance their futures in the federal workforce.
