Healthy Grandfamilies

Healthy Grandfamilies (HGF) is a vital program that provides much-needed support, education and services to grandparents who are raising their grandchildren in West Virginia. The program’s primary goal is to assist grandparents in navigating the challenges that come with raising grandchildren and to help them provide a healthy and stable home.

One of the most significant ways that HGF accomplishes its objective is by offering discussion sessions that allow grandparents to share their experiences and learn from one another. These sessions are facilitated by trained professionals who understand grandparents’ unique challenges. By providing a safe and supportive environment, HGF enables grandparents to connect with others in similar situations, which can be a tremendous source of comfort and empowerment.

In addition to discussion sessions, HGF also offers social work case management services. These services are designed to provide grandparents with personalized assistance in navigating the complex legal, financial and social systems involved in raising grandchildren. HGF Extension Educators are trained to help grandparents access the resources they need to provide their grandchildren with a stable and healthy home.

HGF’s workshops are delivered in collaboration with the WVSU Department of Social Work. This collaboration ensures that the program is effective and informative and meets the unique needs of WV’s grandfamilies. The workshops cover various topics, including legal issues, financial planning and child development. By providing this education, HGF empowers grandparents with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and provide the best possible care for their grandchildren.
