INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Members of the Yellow Jacket ROTC Battalion participated in a two-day field training exercise designed to improve Cadets’ leadership skills March 7-8 at Camp Arrowhead in Ona, W.Va.
In all, more than 80 Cadets from West Virginia State University, West Virginia University Institute of Technology, University of Charleston, Glenville State College and Marshall University participated in the joint field training exercise.
The session involved two training exercises, tactical patrol lanes and land navigation. Each exercise focused on forcing the Cadets to face and overcome challenges and exercise their leadership abilities. Cadets rotated through various leadership positions including Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader and Squad Leader and were evaluated based on their performance in each position.
The joint training exercise prepares Cadets to participate in either the Leader’s Training Course (LTC) or the Leadership Development and Assessment Course (LDAC), both conducted at Fort Knox, Ky., this summer. LTC is an intense classroom and field training exercise intended as an accelerated version of the first two years of leadership development training Cadets normally receive on campus during the first two years of ROTC instruction. By taking this training Cadets qualify for enrollment in the last two years of on-campus ROTC training, commonly known as the Advanced Course.
The LDAC is the U.S. Army Cadet Command’s capstone training event and evaluates Cadets on their knowledge of military skills, their leadership ability and their potential to become U.S. Army Officers. Most Cadets attend LDAC between their junior and senior undergraduate years after having contracted to join the Army. Successful completion of LDAC is a prerequisite to becoming an Army officer through the ROTC program.
The joint field training exercise was sponsored by the Yellow Jacket and Thundering Herd Battalions.
