INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) students will be on hand Saturday, June 20, and Saturday, June 27, during Charleston’s annual FestivALL celebration helping to educate those who attend on the role and importance of county government.
The WVSU C.R. Byrd Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) in conjunction with students from the University’s Education Department and officials with the West Virginia Association of Counties (WVACO) will be hosting a booth and running a trivia wheel to educate FestivALL goers about county government offices and the association.
The booth and trivia wheel will be located in front of the WVSU Capitol Center Theatre at 123 Summers St. in downtown Charleston and will be operated from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Those visiting the booth will have the opportunity to meet with local, county officials as well as the WVSU students and representatives of the WVACO.
This is the beginning of a partnership between WVSU’s Department of Communications and Media Studies, the WVSU Education Department and WVACO to educate students about government at the county level. In addition to the booth, educational tools are being created and will be made available to all public school teachers in the 55 counties within the next two years.
The educational campaign, crafted by WVSU C.R. Byrd Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, is intended to increase the awareness of the WVACO mission, which is to achieve unity of purpose among elected county officials in order to promote the professionalism, innovation, and preservation of county government for the benefit of the citizens they serve to create a better West Virginia.
