INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) Director of Advisement Programs Sharon Smith Banks has been appointed as the International Human Resources Chair for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
With headquarters in Chicago, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. has more than 300,000 members worldwide. As chair of the Human Resources Committee, Banks will work with the central office staff on issues related to compensation and benefits, recruiting and hiring employees, performance management and organization development. Her term in office will run through 2022.
“I am humbled by this honor to serve our 300,000 members, and to give back to a sisterhood that has meant so much to me,” Banks said.
Banks was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. while a student at Tennessee State University. She has continued to serve the organization in various capacities throughout her career including as president, vice president, assistant recording secretary, graduate advisor, chaplain, connections coordinator, scholarship chair and founders’ day chair.
A former member of the WVSU Board of Governors, Banks received the 2016 Martin Luther King, Jr. State Holiday Commission ‘Sharing of Self’ Award.
Banks earned her bachelor’s degree in speech pathology and audiology from Tennessee State University and her master’s degree from Salem International University. In addition to her role in advising students, Banks is also an adjunct professor of speech communications at WVSU.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. beganon the campus of Howard University in 1908.
