INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) Chief of Staff Dr. DeNeia Thomas has been selected by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) as a member of its Peer Corps.
The HLC Peer Corps is comprised of experienced, detailed-oriented academics and administrators who serve as peer reviewers to evaluate member institutions for adherence to HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation. Peer Corps members also offer feedback that contributes to the quality of an institution’s processes and academic offerings.
“Serving as a member of the Peer Corps with HLC presents an exciting opportunity to expand and strengthen my expertise in accreditation and overall institutional effectiveness, which is the most critical component for the vitality of educational institutions. Demonstrating standards of quality is the requisite for its graduates,” said Thomas. “I look forward to this national and international collaboration with members from within the Peer Corps and throughout our peer institutions to advance West Virginia State in fulfilling 21st century higher education mandates and its mission.”
The peer review entails bringing judgment based on experience and knowledge to the evaluation process. In all evaluation processes, judgment, reason and the documentation of evidence contribute to effective peer review.
Before joining WVSU, Thomas served as the Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Professor of Psychology at Kentucky State University.
Thomas earned her doctorate degree in educational psychology, an education specialist degree in school psychology and a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Kentucky and her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Kentucky State University.
The HLC is an independent corporation that was founded in 1895 as one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States. HLC accredits degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions in the North Central region, which includes 19 states.
