INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University (WVSU) Chapter of the National Broadcasting Society – Alpha Epsilon Rho was recognized for their outstanding commitment to community service at the organization’s 73 annual national convention March 24-28 in Atlanta.
In addition to the group award, WVSU senior communications student Scotty White received the Alpha Epsilon Rho Honor Society Student of the Year award. This award recognizes outstanding scholarship, leadership and commitment.
In all, WVSU students were finalists in four production categories and two non-production categories at the national convention.
WVSU student finalists were: James Olah, senior, for his music video “Gage: Don’t Mind if I Do;” Corey Meadows, senior, for his animation “Heisenjosh;” Scotty White, senior, for the audio drama, “Chronicles of Limbo Chapter 1;” and Candice Holliday, junior, Elaine Abdalla, junior, and John Cantees, junior, for their film trailer “Dinner with the Daisleys.”
“West Virginia State University students are extremely prepared to compete in this competition and always represent the University well,” said Kim Cobb, co-advisor to the WVSU National Broadcasting Society chapter.
Sherri Shafer, also co-advisor to the WVSU chapter, was elected for a second year as the National President of Alpha Epsilon Rho. Shafer will serve in this capacity on the national group’s Board of Governors for a year. As the WVSU chapter co-advisor, Shafer works toward acknowledging students for their scholarship and leadership.
“It is important to recognize the academic achievement of students in media majors, as well as their commitment to leadership and service,” Shafer said.
The National Broadcasting Society – Alpha Epsilon Rho, is a student and professional society with more than 85 chapters on college, university, community college and high school campuses. The Society had its beginning in the early 1940’s on the campus of Stephens College in Columbia, Miss. Over 30,000 individuals have been initiated into the society since its founding.
