INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) has announced it is lowering early enrollment tuition for high school students taking courses to $25 per credit hour.
The change is effective for the fall 2015 semester. Previously, early enrollment tuition for high school students was $84 per credit hour.
“We are incredibly excited about this opportunity and what it means for high school students across the Kanawha Valley and the state of West Virginia,” said WVSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Kumara Jayasuriya. “With this tuition decrease, students who would otherwise not possess the means to afford college courses, will dramatically increase their chances of pursuing, persisting, and, ultimately, attaining a higher education degree.”
In the spring 2015 semester, WVSU launched a 1+3 program allowing high school students in Boone, Kanawha and Putnam counties to get a jump start on their college education. Through the 1+3 program, students can complete their first 30 hours of college credit while still in high school, and then finish their degree at WVSU over the next three years.
“Our hope is this tuition decrease, when coupled with our 1+3 program will provide students an extremely affordable, easily accessible opportunity to graduate within four years,” Jayasuriya said.
The 1+3 program is for students seeking bachelor’s degrees in art, biology, business administration, chemistry and elementary education.
Enrollment for the fall semester at WVSU is now underway. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 17.
