West Virginia State Women’s Basketball Coach Goes for Career Victory No. 600

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) women’s basketball Coach David Smith will be going for career win No. 600 on Saturday, Jan. 18, when the Lady Yellow Jackets take on the Mountain Lions of Concord University.
Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Athens for the two Mountain East Conference (MEC) rivals.
The Lady Yellow Jackets will take an overall record of 11-4 into the contest with a MEC record of 7-2, best for second place in the conference. The Mountain Lions sport an overall record of 6-6 and are 4-5 in MEC play, best for eighth in the league.
Smith comes into the game with an overall career record of 599 wins and 289 losses, giving him the fifth most victories among active NCAA Division II women’s basketball coaches. He started the 2013-2014 season the 11 winningest coach in NCAA Division II women’s basketball history.
This season marks Smith’s second leading the Lady Yellow Jackets following a 13-14 campaign in 2012-2013.
In 2007, the NCAA named Smith as one of “Women’s Basketball’s Finest” in their 25-year anniversary publication.
Smith came to Institute following successful stints at Bellarmine University, Shippensburg University and St. Joseph’s College.
