INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Beginning this fall, West Virginia State University (WVSU) is launching new programs that will prepare students for careers in the food and agriculture industries. Applications are now being accepted for the 1890 Scholarship Program, which will provide funding for undergraduate students majoring in plant and soil science, agribusiness and agricultural economics.
Funded by Congress and administered by the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, scholarships will be made available to eligible students majoring in one of the following options and concentrations: “Part of our founding mission at West Virginia State University is to provide innovative teaching, research, and outreach efforts in the agricultural sector, and these new programs will allow us to expand our efforts more directly into the classroom,” said WVSU President Anthony L. Jenkins. “With these new concentrations available within our degree programs, we are investing in our students and in the future of agriculture for West Virginia and beyond. I commend our Academic Affairs and Research and Public Service units in the development of these exciting new offerings.”
Jenkins worked alongside members of the United States Congress to ensure funding for the 1890 Scholarship Program was included in the historic 2018 Farm Bill. Under Section 7117 of the bill, scholarship funding for students at 1890 Land-Grant Institutions, of which WVSU is one of 19 in the nation, is provided for students who intend to pursue careers in the food and agricultural sciences, and other related disciplines as determined by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.
Full and partial scholarships will be provided to successful applicants that include support for such costs as tuition, room and board, books and supplies, and meals.
