INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) will host nearly 500 high school seniors on Friday, November 15, for West Virginia GEAR UP Day.
West Virginia GEAR UP is a federally funded program that helps students prepare to succeed in education and training beyond high school. “GEAR UP” stands for “Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs,” and the program’s goal is to help more students pursue their dreams of earning a college diploma or skillset certificate.
Students will begin arriving on the WVSU campus between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. where they will take tours of campus and have lunch in the Wilson University Union. At approximately 11:25 a.m., students will gather in the P. Ahmed Williams Auditorium of Ferrell Hall for a welcome ceremony that will feature information on the WVSU admissions process and financial aid information. This will be followed by a panel discussion featuring current WVSU students and WVSU alumni. At approximately 12:30 p.m., the panel discussion will conclude and students will depart campus.
High school students will be attending from Mingo Central High School, Montcalm High School, Oak Hill High School, Pikeview High School, Point Pleasant High School, Princeton High School, Scott High School, Van High School, Webster County High School, Westside High School, and Wirt County High School.
West Virginia GEAR UP is managed by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission in collaboration with the West Virginia Community and Technical College System, the West Virginia Department of Education and other community partners.
