INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The state’s sesquicentennial will frame West Virginia State University’s (WVSU) College of Professional Studies convocation program on Tuesday, April 30.
Kanawha County Delegate Meshea Poore will deliver the convocation’s keynote address, “How Bold, Caring and Daring Are You?”
The convocation will take place beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Wallace Hall, room 122. It is free and open to the public.
“As the 150 Anniversary of West Virginia statehood rapidly approaches, we are looking forward to Meshea Poore’s motivational speech to inspire and challenge our students to help them shape a new West Virginia, a new America and a new world through public service,” said Dr. Robert Harrison, dean of the College of Professional Studies.
Preparing qualified professionals to serve and lead in a global society is the mission of the College of Professional Studies, said Harrison.
The convocation will feature participation by WVSU students and ROTC members, as well as a presentation by Kellie Toledo, director of Counseling and Academic Support Services, on “The Bold, Caring and Daring Assessment Instrument.”
Poore was born in Charleston and graduated from Capital High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and went on to obtain a Doctor of Juris Prudence Degree from Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, La.
On Jan.10, 2010, Poore was sworn into the West Virginia House of Delegates having been appointed by the state’s 34 Governor Joe Manchin, after a vacancy of the seat. In the May 2010 primary election she earned a majority of the Democratic Party vote which allowed her the nomination to defend the seat in the November 2010 general election. She was re-elected to the House of Delegates in 2012 and currently serves on the Judiciary Committee, the Health Committee, the Constitutional Revision Committee and the Energy, Industry and Labor/Economic Development and Small Business Committee.
