INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) will host the annual RESA III Math Field Day Competition on Friday, March 13, beginning at 9 a.m. in Wallace Hall.
More than 100 students from Boone, Clay, Kanawha and Putnam counties will be on WVSU’s Institute campus for the day-long competition which will decide who will go on to participate in the statewide Math Field Day.
“We are excited to welcome so many of the region’s best and brightest students to our campus,” said Dr. Naveed Zaman, Interim Dean of the WVSU College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. “This will give us an opportunity to showcase for tomorrow’s college students some of the exciting developments taking place here, particularly in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields where we continue to add cutting edge opportunities through programs like our Research Rookies.”
During Math Field Day the students take a variety of tests designed to challenge their mathematical abilities. Students in grades 4-9 are scored per grade level, while students in grades 10-12 are scored as one group.
Faculty from the WVSU Department of Mathematics and Computer Science will create the questions for the tests that students in grades 10-12 will be taking during math field day, and will then grade the exams. In addition, WVSU faculty and students will also serve as exam proctors and in other volunteer capacities during the competition.
An awards presentation for those receiving the highest scores and closing ceremonies will take place at approximately 1:30 p.m.
