INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) will host a free solar eclipse viewing event for students, faculty, staff and the surrounding community Monday, Aug. 21, outside of Hamblin Hall near the University’s iconic Clock Tower.
The event will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., during the time a total solar eclipse will be visible across the entire United States for the first time since 1918.
While the event is open to all, only 80 pairs of viewing glasses will be available.
During the event participants will also have the opportunity to creatively view the eclipse by walking through a blackout tent, or through indirect viewing with a magnifying glass.
There will also be a “Kepler’s Lab” activity giving participants a realistic gauge of how far apart planets are from one another.
The eclipse viewing event is being sponsored by CASTEM, the WVSU College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the WVSU Space Club.
