INSITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) will host a screening and discussion of excerpts of the film “Slavery by Another Name” on Thursday, Jan. 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in room 134 of the Wilson University Union.
The event is free and open to the public and is being hosted in conjunction with the Kanawha County Public Library.
The film is based on the 2008 Pulitzer Prize winning book of the same name by Douglas Blackmon and examines new forms of forced labor that kept thousands of African-Americans in the South in bondage following the Civil War until the onset of World War II.
Dr. Lois Lucas, WVSU professor of history, will serve as the facilitator of the program.
The film will be shown in its entirety Monday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m. at the main branch of the Kanawha County Public Library on Capitol Street in Charleston.
The film is being brought to the area through a grant the library received titled “Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle.”
The library was supplied with a series of films related to Civil Rights history designed to stimulate discussion related to issues of Civil Rights in America.
