INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) will host a new band competition at Lakin Field at Dickerson Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 12, beginning at 9 a.m. and featuring 14 local school bands comprised of more than 1,000 students.
The first Cavalcade of Bands Southwest Regional Band Festival is open to the public. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students.
“We salute the members of the participating bands for their hard work and dedication to the art and pageantry of marching bands,” said Scott Woodard, Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at WVSU. “It is our sincere hope that their time on the campus of West Virginia State University is enjoyable, memorable and that the end of the day finds them fulfilled with a sense of accomplishment and pride in themselves and their organizations.”
The Cavalcade of Bands is co-sponsored by WVSU and the St. Albans High School Music Department. In the event of inclement weather, the competition will relocate to the auditorium of the Davis Fine Arts Building.
The following schools will be competing Saturday: Beavercreek High School, Capital High School, Hurricane High School, Nitro High School, Oak Hill High School, Parkersburg High School, Parkersburg South High School, Princeton High School, Ritchie County High School, St. Albans High School, Sissonville High School, South Charleston High School and Woodrow Wilson High School.
In addition, the Andrew Jackson Middle School band will perform the National Anthem, and the West Virginia State University marching band will also perform Saturday as an exhibition.
