INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) will host the 2019 Upward Bound Summer Olympics on Wednesday, June 26, beginning at 10 a.m.
More than 400 Upward Bound students from Concord University, Davis & Elkins College, Marshall University, Salem University, West Virginia University, West Virginia University Institute of Technology and WVSU will compete in a series of academic and athletic events throughout the day.
The annual event will begin at 10 a.m. with a welcome ceremony in the Ferrell Hall auditorium that will feature a video message from U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va. Capito and U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., were instrumental in restoring Upward Bound funding to WVSU in 2018.
“This is an excellent opportunity for more than 400 students from throughout the state to get together for a day of camaraderie and a shared vision,” said Krystal Tolliver, director of the WVSU Upward Bound program. “What these students are doing now will affect generations to come.”
Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to identify and provide services for first-generation college bound high school students. Upward Bound exposes participants to academic, cultural, social, and recreational activities. These experiences can help a student become successful in post-secondary education and beyond.
Upward Bound also provides a variety of cultural and career enrichment experiences, such as college visits and tours, cultural enrichment activities, ACT and SAT preparation, scholarship workshops, and academic advising.
The WVSU Upward Bound program serves high school students attending Capital, South Charleston, Logan, Nitro, Riverside, St. Albans, and Sissonville.
