INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) will celebrate its 2019 Homecoming with a variety of activities Oct. 3-5, including a parade, football game against West Liberty University and a dinner cruise on the Kanawha River.
The three-day Homecoming celebration will kick off with the annual State of the University address by WVSU President Anthony L. Jenkins at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, in the P. Ahmed Williams Auditorium, located on the second floor of Ferrell Hall.
Other activities scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 3, include a WVSU National Alumni Association Board Meeting set for 3 p.m. at the Charleston Marriott, and a Young Alumni Mixer at 7 p.m. in the Erickson Alumni Center on campus.
On Friday, Oct. 4, at 10 a.m. in the Fannin S. Belcher Theater of the Davis Fine Arts Building an induction ceremony will be held to honor the newest members of the Yellow Jacket Battalion ROTC Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is free and open to the public.
Friday’s Homecoming activities will also include a golf outing at Little Creek Golf Course in South Charleston with registration at 10 a.m. and a shotgun start at 11 a.m. Cost is $50 per player and proceeds benefit the WVSU men’s basketball team.
At 2 p.m. Friday in the Dr. Ann Brothers Smith Conference Room of the Judge Damon J. Keith Scholars Hall, President Jenkins will hold an open forum and take questions from alumni, guests and friends. Following the forum, at 3 p.m. all alumni are invited to join President Jenkins in the student plaza for an alumni group photo. At 5 p.m. on Oct. 4 in the Belcher Theater in the Davis Fine Arts Building a Coronation Ceremony will take place to crown Mr. and Miss State.
Friday at 7:30 p.m. the WVSU National Alumni Association will hold its annual Homecoming Awards Banquet at the Charleston Marriott. Tickets are $85 in advance and can be purchased by visiting or by calling (304) 766-3387.
On Saturday, Oct. 5, at 8:30 a.m. in room 134 of the Wilson University Union, the National “W” Club will induct new members into the Sports Hall of Fame. Cost to attend the induction brunch is $10 and tickets will be sold at the event.
At 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 5, the annual Homecoming Parade will begin at Shawnee Park and proceed along Route 25 before turning onto campus and continuing along the red road through the heart of campus to the football field where it will be followed by tailgating.
At noon a ceremony will take place outside the Dickerson Stadium entrance for the naming of Warren Anderson Way. Anderson was the first Yellow Jackets football player to be drafted by an NFL team.
At 1 p.m. the WVSU Yellow Jackets will take on the West Liberty University Hilltoppers in the annual Homecoming football game at Lakin Field at Dickerson Stadium. Tickets are $12 and will be sold at the gate.
At 5 p.m. the new WVSU women’s soccer team will take on the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats at the nearby Shawnee Sports Complex. This will be the first home match for the women’s soccer program.
Also at 5 p.m. there will be a Step Show featuring all Greek organizations at the Mark Cardwell Court in Fleming Hall. Tickets are $5 for WVSU students with ID and $10 general admission.
At 7 p.m. Saturday a boat ride featuring a dinner buffet and music will take place on the Kanawha River. This is the first Homecoming boat ride to take place in more than 20 years. This event is sold out.
