INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University’s (WVSU) theatre group will be performing “The Good Woman of Setzuan” Wednesday, April 19, through Saturday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. nightly in the David Skeen Theatre in Cole Complex on the school’s Institute campus.
The production is directed by WVSU Professor Susan Marrash-Minnerly and features a cast of current students, faculty, alumni and actors from the community.
“The play is beautiful, thought-provoking, exegesis of the inherit duality of the human condition,” said Minnerly. “Is it possible to survive in this world and still be good?”
Written by Bertolt Brecht and set in China between World War I and World War II, “The Good Woman of Setzuan” explores the theme of duality through the character of Shen Te, a good hearted prostitute who is forced to create a cold, unfeeling alter ego in order to stop the townspeople from taking advantage of her.
The production features an original score composed by Matt Jackfert and performed by Scott Christian of the West Virginia Symphony.
Admission is free for WVSU students with a student ID. General admission tickets are $10 and will be available at the door.
The production is part of “Essential Stages: The Donna Skeen Theater Artist Enrichment Series.”
