INSTITUTE, W.Va. -West Virginia State University (WVSU) students will host a free science event for kids in grades 6th through 12th Saturday, October 26, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Hamblin Hall on the University’s Institute campus. The “Spooky Science Spookathon” will showcase the spooky side of science with hands-on experiments for kids.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in an egg-drop contest, informative luncheon and interactive demonstrations and explanations including such activities as Zombie Anatomy, Crazy Crystal Ball, Elephant Toothpaste, Eerie Electricity, Magician Madness, Zombie Robotics and more.
The goal of the event is to initiate and foster the curiosity of STEM-related fields in local middle and high school students and is being coordinated entirely by WVSU students.
“The idea for the event was inspired by the Halloween holiday and my passion for science,” said Event Coordinator Ashlea Simmers, president of WVSU’s Student Partnership for the Advancement of Cosmic Exploration (S.P.A.C.E.) Club. “I wanted to combine this holiday with science in order to share the mystery and awe that can arise when studying a STEM-related career. Science, in every aspect, is filled with magnificent phenomena that pairs almost perfectly with the Halloween stereotype of magic and supernatural occurrences.” WVSU’s student chapter of the American Chemical Society and the Computer Science, Mathematics and Robotics Club are cohosting.
The event will begin with registration at 9 a.m., followed by activities throughout the day. Pre-registration is encouraged by visiting .
