INSTITUTE, W.Va.Ms. Carly Settle, a West Virginia State University (WVSU) student, has been awarded the 2016 “Outstanding Accounting Senior Award” by the Recruiting and Careers Opportunity Committee of the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs).
The Charleston native and a senior accounting major at the WVSU College of Business and Social Sciences initially learned of this competition upon joining the West Virginia Society of CPAs as a sophomore.
“I have diligently worked toward this goal, and I am so thankful to my professors at State, as well as the West Virginia Society of CPAs’ Judy Proctor, Kim Mick and the Recruiting and Career Opportunity Committee,” said Settle. “College can sometimes be overwhelming, but I always remind myself that hard work is tough, just not as tough as the feeling of failure. It is with this mindset that I continually strive to accomplish my goals. State’s business program has been invaluable, opening the door to a wonderful internship experience, and I am proud to represent the University with this award.”
Anticipated to graduate in May 2017, Settle is working toward taking CPA exam and gaining employment at a public accounting firm in the Kanawha Valley.
“On behalf of the entire Yellow Jacket Nation, I applaud Carly for receiving this esteemed honor and, most important, for earning her education in this important field as accountants are vital to businesses, organizations, government agencies and more,” said WVSU President Anthony Jenkins. “I offer my sincere gratitude to the West Virginia Society of CPAs as the recognition they have bestowed upon Carly is a testament to her knowledge as well as our world-class faculty and the high quality accounting degree offered at State.”
“As a Past President of the West Virginia Society of CPAs and a 1970 Alumnus of West Virginia State University, I am pleased to congratulate Carly on this high achievement. West Virginia State has educated a large number of very successful CPAs, other accountants in the Kanawha Valley and throughout the nation. It is good to see that State’s students are being recognized, and the WVSU business department continues its success in educating accounting professionals,” said Gary Swingle, CPA/PFS, Senior Vice President, LLC Member and Investment Advisor Representative of Arnett, Carbis and Toothman Wealth Advisors LLC, and a WVSU Board of Governors Member.
The WV Society of CPAs’ competition included seniors majoring in accounting from colleges and universities all across the state of West Virginia. To compete for the award, students must meet certain criteria including to be on track to graduate between December 2016 and August 2017, be a student member of the WV Society of CPAs, have an accounting GPA and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The mission of the WV Society of CPAs is to unite, safeguard and promote the accounting profession in the state of West Virginia as constituted by CPAs; to cultivate and maintain high professional competency levels and ethical standards within the accounting profession; and to support accountancy education.
