INSTITUTE, W.Va. — The West Virginia State University (WVSU) Student Government Association (SGA) has adopted a Coronavirus Relief Bill that will provide funding to area organizations impacted by the ongoing pandemic.
A total of $6,500 will be distributed through the relief bill with $3,000 to the American Red Cross; $1,000 to the Charleston Area Medical Center; $1,000 to the YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter; $1,000 to the WVSU Food Pantry; and $500 to the FamilyCare Health Center located on the WVSU campus.
“With the cancellation of many of the events that SGA had planned for the spring semester, it was very important to us to make sure that the money for those events would still benefit the students and the community,” said SGA President Colleen Miller. “We chose the Red Cross as the recipient of the largest of the donations we made, because SGA had planned on doing an April blood drive and we were unable to host it.”
The donation to CAMC will go toward medical supplies for personnel on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, while the donation to the YWCA Sojourners Shelter will be used for housing and cleaning supplies. The donations to the Food Pantry and FamilyCare will help in maintaining resources and supplies.
“Our administration wanted to make sure that the money from our budget is put to good use, rather than to let it carry over to next year, when it can benefit so many people right now,” Miller added.
