INSTITUTE, W.Va. — The West Virginia State University Office (WVSU) of Career Services and Co-operative Education will sponsor its fourth annual Student Professional Day “Out of the Jeans and Into the Suits” on Thursday, April 6, 2017, in the James C. Wilson University Union.
This year’s program is a collaborative effort with the WVSU’s National Alumni Association. The purpose of the event is to equip students with tools to succeed beyond graduation. All WVSU students are invited to participate in this free event, but are required to pre-register and arrive in professional dress.
Students may check in beginning at 9 a.m. on April 6, and at 10 a.m. they will have an opportunity to get their photograph taken by a professional photographer in the campus studio in Jones Hall. From 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. students may stop by any or all of the “Professional Pit Stops” to gain tips from local business professionals and the WVSU community on the following topics: Social Media and Job Search, Resume Evaluation and Interview Preparation, Dressing and Conducting Yourself as a Professional, Mind Your Manners, Budget/Debt Management and the Job Application/Background Check process. Local businesses participating include: Bright Futures Learning Services, Verizon, YWCA, USDA, Enterprise Holdings, and Consumer Credit Counseling Service.
At 12:30 p.m. students may participate in “Corporate Conversations” where they will meet one-on-one with area business professionals. Companies represented include Eli Lilly, BrickStreet, Alcon Manufacturing, Manpower and the Cleveland Clinic. Both activities will be in Room 134 of the University Union. Also, this year from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. for students who want to learn about professional image they will be taken to Charleston to hear from the experts at retail outlets Tony the Tailor for men’s wear and Macy’s for women’s wear. Transportation will be provided for students.
Student Professional Day will conclude with a dining etiquette program from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in McGhee Suites led by Certified International Etiquette and Protocol Advisor Pam Harvit, a popular national speaker who has presented to executives and employees of medical schools, hospitals, universities and many other organizations. During this five-course meal, students will learn proper dining etiquette for a business function. Registration for the dinner is full, but students interested may sign up to be on a wait list.
