INSTITUTE, W.Va. — The West Virginia State University (WVSU) social work program has had its accreditation reaffirmed by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the national accrediting body for social work education programs.
The program’s accreditation was reaffirmed for eight years and now continues until 2025. The WVSU social work program has been continuously accredited since 1974.
Accreditation by the CSWE means that a program has met the standards for quality set for by the organization. Graduates of accredited programs are eligible to apply for a social work licensure in every state in the country where licensing at the bachelor’s level is required, including West Virginia.
“The reaffirmation process is extremely rigorous, and the success of the WVSU social work program in achieving this status is a tribute to the hard work and commitment of our faculty, staff, students, administration and community partners,” said Dr. Brenda Wamsley, chair of the WVSU Department of Social Work. “Trained social workers are sorely needed in our society today to address critical issues such as substance abuse, family violence, mental health and health care concerns, poverty, crime and delinquency, aging issues, disabilities services, veterans concerns, social and economic injustice, and many more challenges currently facing our West Virginia families.”
Founded in 1952, the Council on Social Work Education is the national association representing social work education in the United States. Its members include over 760 accredited bachelor’s and master’s degree social work programs, as well as individual social work educators, practitioners and agencies dedicated to advancing quality social work education.
The CSWE’s Commission on Accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency for social work education in the United States and its territories. For more information, visit .
