INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) will host a special family day on campus including a free event and a book giveaway for children, on Saturday, Oct. 24.
As a part of WVSU Literacy Day, every child between the ages of 5 and 10 who attends the Yellow Jackets football game on Oct. 24 will receive a free, new or gently used book.
The Yellow Jackets face the Glenville State College Pioneers at 1 p.m. at Dickerson Stadium at Lakin Field. All children under 12 will be admitted free. Regular tickets are $5, available at the gate.
“We have a proud tradition of community service at West Virginia State University and this is another way that our students, faculty and staff can show their support of area youth,” said WVSU President Brian O. Hemphill. “By donating a new or gently used book, we are helping to support literacy in our community, and hopefully inspiring area children to become lifelong learners.”
Prior to the Oct. 24 football game, donations of new and gently used books are being accepted at various points around WVSU’s Institute campus through Oct. 22.
Donations are being accepted at: the WVSU Student Affairs Office in the Wilson University Union; the athletic director’s office in 210 Fleming Hall; Erickson Alumni Center; and the college dean’s offices at 112 Hill Hall, 101B Hamblin Hall, 520 Wallace Hall and 311 Davis Fine Arts Building.
Before kickoff of the Oct. 24 football game, area families are invited to participate in a free Family Day event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. featuring pumpkin decorating and tailgating. The Family Day event is hosted by WVSU Military Student Services in conjunction with WVSU Parent and Family Programs.
