INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) Professor of Genetics and Plant Breeding Dr. Padma Nimmakayala has been selected as a Fulbright Specialist and recognized among the World’s Top 5% Scientists in the 2025 Global Scientific Index and Scientist Ranking, based on bibliometric analysis of global research contributions.
As a Fulbright Specialist, Nimmakayala will collaborate with faculty and researchers at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, through scholarly exchange, research collaboration, curriculum development and capacity-building activities that promote international partnerships and advance agricultural research and education.
“Dr. Nimmakayala’s selection as a Fulbright Specialist and her recognition among the world’s top scientists are remarkable achievements that reflect both her individual excellence and the impact that research being conducted at West Virginia State University is having on a global scale,” said WVSU President Ericke S. Cage. “Her work in plant genetics and genomics is advancing agricultural innovation, strengthening international partnerships, and creating opportunities for future generations of students and scientists.”
Nimmakayala’s research focuses on breeding, genetics and genomics in watermelons and peppers. She aims to develop molecular markers for fruit quality, yield, and heavy metal tolerance and to integrate these tools for genome-assisted breeding.
During an upcoming visit to TNAU, Nimmakayala will conduct a short course entitled “Recent Advances in Genomics and GWAS for Vegetable Crop Improvement.” Genome-Wide Association Study, or GWAS, is a research method in genetics used to find links between specific genetic variants and particular diseases or traits. The course is designed to impart knowledge on the application of GWAS in agriculture, methods used in population improvement, and advances and applications of genomics in vegetable crop improvement.
Established by Congress in 1946, the Fulbright Program, the United States government’s flagship program of international educational and cultural exchange, offers passionate and accomplished students and scholars in more than 160 countries the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to mutual understanding.
Nimmakayala is also one of two WVSU faculty members to receive a Top 5% ranking in the 2025 Global Scientist Index and Scientist Ranking. SciRank Global is the world’s leading global scientific index, ranking 10 million active researchers fairly, transparently and independently of geography or institutional prestige. The 2025 Global Scientific Index and Scientist Ranking analyzes more than 8 million active researcher profiles and 20 million scholarly works sourced from OpenAlex, the world’s largest open research database. Only the top 5% by Normalized Composite Score qualify for certification.
